March Happenings at the Brewco

SF Beer Week is over and we are still catching our breath. What a week it was! We are especially thrilled and honored to have hosted this year's Bay Area IPA Challenge at our Pacific Standard taproom in Berkeley.

Congratulations to Faction Brewing for taking first place with their Stud Muffin IPA! Altamont Beer Works and Drake's Brewing Company took second and third place, respectively. Many thanks to all participants for coming out and showing us what Bay Area brewers can do!

For those who haven't had a chance, our Bat Flip XXXIPA is still on tap at our brewery. This full bodied, hop-forward IPA is a treat; defying the triple IPA reputation of overwhelming hops flavor, the Bat Flip proves that even a triple can be balanced by the proper malt profile. Hurry in - we will probably run out of this beer in the first few days of March.

We were very happy with the results of using lupulin powder in our Bat Flip IPA, so much so that we are incorporating it into another IPA coming out in March. The One Shot at Glory IPA will feature lupulin powder from Mosaic hops as well as whole-cone Common hops flowers. This IPA will also feature Eldorado, Citra, Amarillo, and Ekuanot hops.

Brewmaster James Costa is continuing our series of fruit Belgian blonde ales with a boysenberry-based creation. Any fans of our Plum Belgian Blonde Ale will be happy to hear about this next installment. Less sweet than one might expect from a fruit beer, the Boysenberry Belgian Blonde Ale will be an approachable beer that offers something different - and delicious - for beer enthusiasts.

Some of our regulars may remember the Word on the Street IPA that graced our taps in January. This paler-than-most IPA was such a hit that it sold out almost immediately after its release. We are pleased to announce that another batch is due to return in March. Featuring Weyermann premium pilsner malt, this ale is lighter in color than the traditional IPA. The unique malt profile gives this beer an enticing light malt structure that is balance by Citra, Simcoe, Eldorado, and Equinox hops, which lend notes of tropical citrus to this extremely popular creation. If you missed it the first time around, you'll get a second chance this month.

The Papa Juice Old Ale is out and bottles are available for purchase at our brewery in Half Moon Bay and at the Pacific Standard Tap Room in Berkeley. This one came out well. So well, in fact, that our brewers are already working on another batch of the same recipe. This ale is full bodied and slightly smoky, a must-try for fans of strong ales.

The Red Sails in the Sunset Flanders Red Ale is still available in bottles. This sour ale is brewed with cherries, giving a slight fruitiness to balance the funky sour profile you'd expect from a Flanders Red. This is certainly something special; brewed and aged for more than a year in oak wine barrels, the Red Sails in the Sunset is a treat for sour beer drinkers.

We will be representing the coast side in the Track 7 Second Annual IPA Invitational and Competition. Come support us! The invitational will be at 1-5 pm at the Natomas taproom located at 3747 W Pacific Ave. F, Sacramento, CA. Joining in the fun will be Almanac Beer Compay, Altamont Beer Works, Alvarado Street Brewery, Beachwood Brewing, Belching Beaver Brewery, Bike Dog Brewing Company, Boneyard Beer, Claimstake Brewing Company, Cooperage Brewing Company, Device Brewing Company, Drake's Brewing Company, Fieldwork Brewing Company, Firestone Walker Brewing Comany, Ironfire Brewing Company, Kern River Brewing Company, Knee Deep Brewing Company, Lengthwise Brewing Company, Marble Brewery, Modern Times Beer, Moonraker Brewing Company, Mother Earth Brew Company, Mraz Brewing Company, New Glory Crafy Brewery, Pizza Port Brewing Company, Sante Adairius Rustic Ales, Societe Brewing Company, Temescal Brewing, Three Weavers Brewing Company, and Tioga-Sequoia Brewing Company.
